I started to work out what my next jobs would be when my mobile phone rings. It was Judith asking me to return and I refused, however after some fast-talking, pleading and the fact her girlfriend was going away for the rest of the week I finally gave in.
I got to her house when the rain started to pelt. I stood under their patio and watched the newly raked soil wash away into the pool, there was nothing I could do. The weather was cold and the rain had settled in at least for today. Judith stood next to me and shivered also watching in vain.
“Well I guess I’ll try again tomorrow.” and looked down at her
“What will you do with the rest of your day?” Asked Judith
“I dunno go home catch up on some book work.” I groaned at the thought
“Would you like to go out? I have some shopping I need to do.” Offered Judith
“Oh I don’t think it’s appropriate.” Taken back by the offer
“Jeez Max it’s only shopping not a bloody date.” Judith said rolling her eyes
“Shopping you say.” Warming to the idea
“and lunch.” She continued
“oh I don’t know.” I joked “this sounds more like a date.”
Judith laughed “Na I expect sex on a first date.” And giggled at my expression
“Oh really.” With surprise in my tone
“yes but this isn’t a date.” She said mockingly
“No no it’s not.” And we laughed
I spent the next 2 hours shopping for clothes with Judith. She tried on just about everything in every store and asked my opinion on everything. The truth was she looked great in anything or nothing remembering her by the poolside.
“ahhh” I still get a shiver.
“What's up.” She heard my gasp
“nothing getting hungry”
“Me too my treat.”
“no I can pay for my own.” I protested
“No I insist please let me as a thank you for putting up with me.”
“It’s not a chore Judith. I have actually enjoyed your company.” Treading carefully
“Well good we have just one more thing to get though.”
“Like what you nearly bought everything.” I laughed at her shopping obsession
“Not me you.” She said seriously
I protested
“C’mon Max you do need new overalls, those ones can be ditched, they will fall off you soon.” Pauses Judith then winks at me “Not that I would object.” She flirted.
I blushed this was now very dangerous territory. “Fine you pick them out but I’m paying for them and that’s end of it.”
“Are you always this much hard work Max.” Groans Judith
“No you just bring it out in me I guess.”
Judith pokes her tongue out and punches me in the arm. We eventually get back to her house late in the afternoon.
“Well thanks for a lovely day.” Said Judith giving me a hug
My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. “Oh that ok.” Trying to keep my voice calm
We looked at each other and I felt the urge to wrap my arms around her but instead “I’ll see you tomorrow I guess.”
“Ok night Max.”
Next morning I was at Judith’s place early trying to catch up after yesterday’s loss. The rain was holding off but still loomed. I added more topsoil to replace the loss getting it ready for the plants. I started digging over the ground when Judith walked up behind me.
“Morning.” She said with a cheery tone.
“Oh hey.” I noticed Judith dressed in old clothes and had gloves on. “What’s up.” And point to her gloves
“Well since you helped me yesterday the least I could do is help you, so boss what would you like me to do.” And salutes me
She took me by surprise, clients have never offered to help.
“nothing you’re my client I can’t let you do this. Go inside and relax, do what you do.”
Judith’s smile quickly turned upside down. “Fine I will go inside and clean something I guess.” And she started to leave
“Oh hey look if you really want to, I could do with a hand. I need to head over to the nursery to get the plants and the company would be nice.” Judith instantly perked up and helped rake over while I piled on the remaining compost.
We finished up after lunch and went to get the plants. Judith was constantly picking out plants to my dismay
“No not those they require too much watering and have messy berries. If it gets into your pool it will stain.”
“Hey it is my place.” She defiantly puts hand on hips
“Yes but as the experienced landscaper here you should trust me. Move on.” I playfully shoved her on.
After spending an hour longer than intended I loaded everything up but now Judith had disappeared.
“Oh god where is she now” I groaned. I looked to the sky it was about to open up again. I then noticed a guy coming toward the ute with some items.
“hey no I didn’t order those.” I protested
Judith spoke up “I did.”
“I was told specifically no bird baths and or statues because they were.” And I laughed “phallic.”
The guy put them in the ute and giggled.
Judith looked at us and stated, “Well I like phallic.”
“get in” I said trying desperately not to smile at her attempted act of innocence.
We got back as the rain started. “Bloody hell I’ll never get this done.” I groaned.
We put the items under the gazebo. It was too late to do anymore so I started to pack my ute.
“Would you like to stay for dinner?” Asked Judith
I was taken back by the offer “Umm I’m really dirty.”
“You can shower here, I’m sure I have some clothes you can borrow.” She offered
“I can’t….I’ve made plans with someone else.” Wanting so much to stay in her presence.
“Oh ok.” Judith disappointed “well have a nice night Max.”
Judith went inside and I watched her close the door
“Max get in the ute now.” I told myself, my heart racing. I put the keys in the ignition and started it up then rested my head against the steering wheel. “Just go.” I encouraged. Instead I picked up my mobile and dialled.
“Hi Mum I can’t make it tonight have to work back.” I then cut the ignition and went back.
I went inside my stomach was doing flips as I walked through the house. I heard the shower running and caught my breath. I whacked my head with my hand to bring me back to my senses and quickly left.
It was late and Judith was about to turn in when the doorbell rang. “Who is it.”
“It’s Max.”
“Hang on a minute.”
Judith steps back to look at herself in the hallway mirror. She opened a few extra buttons on her shirt and ran a hand through her hair. She opened up and let Max in.
“Umm sorry I know it’s late in all, just need to check up on some stuff.” I stammered
Judith disappointed at her reason. “It's ok I was only going to bed anyway.”
I went out the back and looked around not knowing what to do next. “Well everything seems ok.”
“That’s good.” Replied Judith sullenly
I walked back inside “brrrrr it’s so cold outside and nice and warm here.” I stalled not knowing what I wanted to do next.
Judith yawned “Uh ha well I guess you’re off.”
“Yeh, umm Judith.” I started
“what.” Quickly said Judith
“I….it’s nothing see you tomorrow then.” I said in a disappointed tone
“Fine” Judith annoyed
I started to leave again then turned back to her
“Now what.” Complained Judith, but never got beyond that because I grabbed her face and brushed my lips over hers lightly once, then again with a bit more urgency. I stepped back to see what damaged I caused. Judith threw her arms around my neck and pulled me to her, kissing me longer exploring my mouth with her tongue.
